WICKENBURG, AZ - Tickets to all shows in the Webb Center’s 2008-2009 season will go on presale to members of their Encore Society beginning Monday, June 23 at 9:00am. Shows in the upcoming season include concerts with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Bryan White and Kathy Mattea as well as Broadway musicals such as The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and the 10th anniversary tour of Footloose. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, August 4.
“This is our most exciting and diverse season yet,” stated Cathy Weiss, Executive Director of the Webb Center. “Whether you are a fan of jazz, country, western, Celtic, dance, acrobatics or anything else, you are sure to enjoy the shows coming to our theatre.”
The Webb Center presents national and international touring performances to northwest valley audiences each year. The Encore Society is their donation program, which entitles patrons to receive many benefits throughout the season including participation in this presale. Complete details about joining and making a tax-deductible donation are available on their website www.delewebbcenter.org.
This year’s schedule combines returning favorites with exciting new performers. Returning this year are Cape Breton’s favorite fiddler Natalie MacMaster with her band, the humorous western group Riders in the Sky and the Grammy Award winner Kathy Mattea. The 3 Redneck Tenors will also return with their hysterical blend of comedy and operatically trained voices for a Christmas show, The 3 Redneck Tenors Holiday SPEC-TAC-YULE-AR.
The Webb Center also presents performances in conjunction with Wickenburg’s annual festivals. The reigning “Queen of Bluegrass” Rhonda Vincent will headline the annual Four Corners Bluegrass Festival in November and the folk/country Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will hold two concerts during February’s Gold Rush Days celebrations.
The Webb Center will host some of today’s greatest jazz performers in a once-in-a-lifetime concert, Blue Note Records On Tour – 70th Anniversary. Their national tour will feature Bill Charlap (piano), Peter Bernstein (guitar), Ravi Coltrane (saxophone), Lewis Nash (drums), Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Peter Washington (bass) and Steve Wilson (saxophone). The Phoenix Symphony will also play a Sunday matinee concert BIG Big Band: Jazz at the Symphony with music from Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Duke Ellington.
The young jazz crooner Matt Dusk will also stop by the Webb Center on his latest national tour promoting his latest album Back in Town. Featuring two of legendary pianist Dave Brubeck’s sons, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet will offer their upbeat take on classic and contemporary jazz.
Country and western fans will recognize a few favorites throughout this year’s season. Bryan White (“Rebecca Lynn” and “Someone Else’s Star”) will hold a unique acoustic concert. Kathy Mattea, blending country with folk and Celtic styles, is on tour with her 2008 album Coal.
Comedy fans will have a bellyful of laughs with the Complete History of America (abridged) from the hilarious Reduced Shakespeare Company troupe; the show is an updated Special Election Edition coming just before the November elections. Broadway’s 2005 Tony Award-winning musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six competitors as they bumble their way through competition and adolescence.
Families are welcome at all Webb Center events and tickets to shows are always $5 for students 18 and under. Shows specifically designed for families this year include Chinese acrobatics and kung-fu in JUNGUA – Descendants of the Dragon, and Irish music and step-dance in Celtic Legends.
The Spaghetti Western Orchestra, on their first US tour, rides into town with a wagon train of instruments and sound effects to recreate the music and sound effects of classic movies, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West and more. “This is going to be one of the most eclectic and fun performances we’ll have this year,” commented Weiss. “The band performs using over 120 ‘instruments,’ which range from bassoons to boxes of Corn Flakes, and the sound is spectacular. It’s something you won’t want to miss.”
