Camp Imagination Sees Significant Growth

Release Date: Jun 09, 2008   Author: Ivan Schustak

WICKENBURG, AZ - Beginning June 2, the Webb Center’s Camp Imagination program brings the arts and arts professionals into the lives of 120 children for two weeks. Although the number of students allowed to participate in camp has remained constant for the previous few years, Camp Imagination has seen growth in the depth of programming, outreach to children and involvement from the community. The campers will perform the new musical play Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Story for the public on Friday, June 13 at 6:30pm.

“We are very pleased with the direction camp has gone,” commented Cathy Weiss, Executive Director of the Webb Center. “It has become a regional presence involving students, volunteers and sponsors from surrounding areas as well as Wickenburg.”

This year, students enrolled in Camp Imagination come from Wickenburg and the outlying areas, as well as Glendale, Surprise, Peoria and Prescott. According to Weiss, many of the campers from farther away have relatives in Wickenburg. “For many, Camp Imagination has become a two-week vacation with their grandparents. It is a very welcome and unanticipated effect.”

Thanks to a generous grant from the Wellik Foundation, the Webb Center was able to commission a musical play. The show, Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Story, is an adaptation of the popular children’s tale, customized to fit a large ensemble of students. “As our first time commissioning a play, we have the opportunity to reach a new level of sophistication with campers. The songs, dialogue and subject matter are at the perfect level, allowing students to grow into their roles comfortably and learn a lot.”

Local and regional individuals, businesses and organizations have also reached out to sponsor Camp Imagination in greater numbers than ever. “We have received amazing gifts from the Scottsdale League for the Arts, the Society for Creative Anachronism, the R.H. Johnson Foundation and the West Valley Arts Council,” continued Weiss. “Many local businesses and individuals also gave generously, allowing us to offset most of the cost for each student. Thank you to everyone who gave.”

Tickets are available for Friday’s 6:30pm performance of Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Tale through the Webb Center’s Box Office. To reserve seats, please contact them at 684-6624.
