Camp Imagination Auditions Shone Spotlight On Young Talent

Release Date: May 12, 2008   Author: Ivan Schustak

WICKENBURG, AZ - The Webb Center held auditions for Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Tale this past Friday and Saturday. Over 30 students auditioned for the 12 lead roles in Camp Imagination. Results are now posted on the Webb Center’s front door and their website, www.delewebbcenter.org.

“The amount and quality of students interested in taking a main role during camp was simply outstanding,” commented Cathy Weiss, Executive Director of the Webb Center and one of the judges. “We normally have about 15 try out, and this year we had 33 excellent candidates. Making the final decision about who to cast was extremely difficult.”

Auditions were open to all students enrolled in this year’s Camp Imagination entering the fifth grade or higher. Students were asked to prepare a song and/or monologue and then invited to perform some improvisatory “theatre-games” led by the judges.

“We have some brilliant and quick-witted young people in our midst,” continued Weiss. “Most of the auditioning students were presented with the opportunity to make up a short scene along the lines of the Cinderella story. We judges had a ball watching their ideas come to life!”

The students chosen for main roles may pick up their scripts from the Webb Center’s Box Office beginning Monday, May 19. They are required to memorize their lines prior to the start of Camp on June 2. Many of the students not cast in the main roles will receive a smaller role which will be assigned during the first days of Camp and are encouraged to audition again next summer.

Camp Imagination runs from June 2-13 this year. Students learn many aspects of the arts and work together to put on a musical or play. This year’s show, Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Tale, is being commissioned by the Webb Center and is a re-telling of the classic Cinderella story. The show is being written by children’s playwright Ruth Fost and music by Broadway composer Larry Hochman. There will be a public performance on Friday, June 13; tickets are available through the Webb Center’s Box Office.
